Here we show a historic window restoration project for the Berean Baptist Church in Independence, between Salem and Corvallis. Here we are going to show not only the finished project, but also some work that goes on behind the scenes at the shop.
THE DETAILS
The windows of the church had been in disrepair for quite some time. The wood had deteriorated and the windows had lost structural integrity. Colored panes of glass had been replaced with clear ones.
MORE DAMAGE
As you can see here, the wood muttons of the window had completely decayed. Spray foam and caulking were used at one point in the window's life to hold it together a little bit longer. Intervention was needed.
One window at a time was removed, so that new sash could be fabricated in the shop.
The first window sash onto the operating table.
BEFORE AND AFTER
All efforts were made to safely remove the historic 150 year old glass, so that it could be integrated into the new frames. Each window frame component had to be precisely laminated to match the original arch measurements.
The frame is almost complete and then Voila!
First we applied the primer. Each piece of glass is installed, a few replacement pieces of glass had to be acquired to complete the rebuilding of this historic art piece.
PUTTING IT BACK
The window openings were quite large, about 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall.
ALMOST FINISHED
It is amazing to step back and see the project coming together.
A fully restored historic window is a beautiful sight to behold.
